Russia’s Kamchatka Region Rattled by Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake

nsnbc : Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka peninsula war rattled by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake and several severe aftershocks. The quake struck on January 30 at 03:25 UTC.

The epicenter of the magnitude 7.2 quake was some 106 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, the capital city of Russia’s Kamchatka Krai.

The USGS reported that the hypocenter (depth) was at 153 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports about severe damage or casualties in the region. No tsunami warning was issued.

300 Miles Sw Of Bering I. Komandorski and in the city of Yelizovo, some 160 kilometers from the epicenter, the quake was measured at magnitude 7.0.

The initial quake was followed by several aftershocks. One aftershock with a mangitude of 7.0 and the with the epicenter close to that of the initial quake came at 03:32 UTC.

In Yelizovo an aftershock at 03:42 had a magnitude of 5.1. The aftershock had a magnitude of 4.9 at the coastline.

A following aftershock at 06:53 UTC rattled Yelizovo and the coast with a magnitude of 4.5. A number of smaller aftershocks were registered later on. The Kamchatka region near Japan is prone to earthquakes.
