SA Premier in slanging match on crime

Outgoing South Australian Premier Mike Rann has defended his tough on crime stance and hit back at accusations some of it was just political opportunism.

He also used one of his last days in office to defend his decision to deny parole to eight murderers, in a speech to a police conference that lambasted claims from the opposition.

“I make no apologies for going after those who show complete disregard for the law,” Mr Rann said.

“That’s why we’ve introduced laws to keep the states most dangerous offenders locked up.”

Mr Rann said prisoner numbers had increased from 1400 in 2004 to about 2000 last year, meaning there were an extra 600 people “banged up in jail” who were not going to do harm in the community.

Mr Rann also defended his government’s intervention in a controversial 2003 case, in which 21-year-old Paul Nemer received a suspended sentence for shooting a newspaper delivery driver in the eye.

In an unprecedented move, the government ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions to appeal and Nemer was then sentenced to more than four years jail.

Mr Rann said opposition claims that this intervention was a vote grab was a slur on South Australians who protested the initial sentence.

SA opposition leader Isobel Redmond told the SA police conference the Liberals were smart as well as tough on crime.

“It’s not just about increasing penalties we need to consider crime reduction and a range of interventions,” she said.

She attacked the government’s traffic quotas and fine increases that she said were more about filling budget coffers than road safety concerns.

“Our police are increasingly used as tax collectors for the government,” she said.

SA Police Association president Mark Carroll gave the thumbs up to Mike Rann for his decision to veto parole for “vicious murderers” saying it was directly in line with community and police expectations.

“He stood firm against critics, some lawyers, civil libertarians and ofcourse criminals to support victims, the general public and to our delight police,” Mr Carroll said.
