Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman aspires return the country to pre-1979 moderate Islam

nsnbc : Speaking at an event organized by Saudi Arabia’s Center of International Communication (CIC), a subsidiary of the Ministry for Culture and Information, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that he and Saudi society aspires to return to promoting the moderate Islam that was practiced in the country before 1979.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman_Saudi Arabia_2017Speaking at the event on October 25 Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said “We want to go back to what we were; profess a moderate Islam and be open to all religions. We want a normal life … to live and contribute to the world.”

The Crown Prince referred to 1979 when a significant change occurred in the Saudi Kingdom with the rise of ultra-conservative clerics who criticized the alleged westernization of the country.

Ironically, these dynamics would be used by the USA and allies to recruit “freedom fighters” to fight Soviet troops in Afghanistan, as much as it led to the recruitment of Islamist insurgents for Libya and Syria (among others) since 2011.

In 1979, to stop the supposed loss of Islamic values, they began to issue fatwas (religious edicts) that imposed the application of a very strict Islam. With these decisions, women, for example, were relegated to society.

Witch-craft and sorcery are, as unbelievably and medieval as it may sound, still a capital offense in the Gulf Kingdom. Beside “sorcery” Saudi-Arabia also regularly executes convicts for murder, armed robbery, drug-trafficking, and not to forget, which-craft.

In December 2012 nsnbc international acquired a document showing that Saudi-Arabia had released more than 800 convicts from a number of African and Arab countries who had been sentenced to death.

The classified document was leaked from the Interior Ministry. It showed, that the more than 800 convicts were to be released after having been given the choice between execution and participating in military training before being deployed to Syria to fight “Holy War”.

According to international lawyers known to nsnbc, the practice constitutes a breach against the Geneva Conventions which regulate the wartime rights of civilian and military prisoners. Forced use of prisoners for military service is one of the most serious war crimes.

Independent observers of Saudi Arabia and other Islamic majority counties are skeptical about Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s reformist ambitions – even though they may be most well-intentioned. Oppression of women and systemic human rights abuses are “normal” in most purportedly “moderate” Islamic majority countries.
