Service station set alight, owner tied up

Two assailants beat and tied up a petrol station owner in central western NSW and left the premises in flames as they fled.

Detectives are investigating the fire which burnt the Mt Lambie service station, near Lithgow, to the ground on Saturday night.

Police say the 56-year-old owner was counting the day’s taking in his home next to the service station about 10pm when he answered a knock on his door.

He was confronted by two intruders who assaulted him, forced him to the ground and tied his hands.

Firefighters battled the blaze but the service station was totally destroyed.

The owner was rescued by passing motorists and is being treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Police are yet to confirm he was robbed.
