A paralysed man who suffered brain damage in a car crash almost 20 years ago spoke for the first time – and said ‘I Love You’ to his devoted mother.

Doctors said Simon Ellis, now 37, would never be able to talk again after suffering two skull fractures in a smash in 1992 when he was just 18-years-old.

But he stunned his mother Diane Franklin, 61, by also wishing her a Merry Christmas from his care home bed.

The mother-of-four said: ‘They told us he would die in intensive care and he hasn’t been able to speak for 19 years.

‘But now he has started. I’ll never forget when he said ‘I love you’ to me. The tears started flowing and it was very emotional.

‘Last weekend I said ‘merry’ to him and he said ‘Christmas’. I feel like he’s definitely coming back and as a family we are bubbling over with happiness.

‘The doctors are amazed. They just can’t believe it.’

Simon was injured in 1992 after he got into a car with a drink-driving friend who had consumed several beers.

The car smashed into a wall and Simon was left quadriplegic – without the use of his arms and legs – and now needs round-the-clock care.

His friend escaped without injury.

Doctors said a shunt carrying excess water from his brain to his stomach had suddenly started draining properly – which relieved pressure on his brain and allowed him to speak.

Laura Gill, manager of The Chantry Sue Ryder care home in Ipswich where Simon stays, told the Mirror: ‘We’re all absolutely thrilled.

‘We hope his speech will continue to improve with the help of specialists. It’s fantastic to see him so happy, excited and full of life.

‘It’s the best Christmas present we could have hoped for.’

What a lovely way to see in the New Year. May his recovery keep going.

such a lovely story, but I am confused by this bit “Doctors said a shunt carrying excess water from his brain to his stomach had suddenly started draining properly – which relieved pressure on his brain and allowed him to speak” – does this mean it was not working properly in all that time and if so why didn’t anything get done about it? and isn’t it typical that the drunk driver gets away without injury, there is no justice sometimes.

So pleased to read about this happy news, but to those people who are saying his Mum doesn’t look after him because he’s in a care home should stop to think before they comment. Firstly as someone else pointed out, she may not have been capeable to give the type of care and treatment needed in his case.
also, the Lady has other children to care for. None of this means that she does nothing at all for him, i’m sure she has done everything in her power to contribute to his care, and she very obviously loves him. I wish them and the rest of the family all good wishes for the future. xx

Heart warming – just goes to prove – there’s always hope

Why is he in a care home? My mum looks after me 24/7 and has done ever since I became tetraplegic aged 19 37 years ago — now THAT’S loving devotion!

I think the problem is that both you and your mother are female, most men aged 18-37 and above would not want their mothers wiping and washing their nether regions. Just a thought

My first words would be “kill me”. What an awful existence.

What an amazing story! Shows that sometimes those who have faith long after others would have given up sometimes get their reward.

Calm down all you sob story seekers. This mother didn’t look after him – he was in a home.

Franis you are a patheic excuse of a human being along with all the others who have been red arrowed!
What nasty vile comments rot in hell the lot of you!

Very best wishes and hopefully onwards in all aspects. How wonderful for his mum

Miracles do happen sometimes! Fantastic.
