Six arrested at SA mine protest

Anti-nuclear activists say six people have been arrested during protest action at the Olympic Dam uranium and copper mine in South Australia’s north.

Spokeswoman Izzy Brown says the six were arrested on Tuesday as activists staged a “breakfast not bombs” event on a road near the mine site.

They blocked the road describing those involved as “picnickers” and reported seeing a number of trucks heading for the mine being turned away.

Police have yet to confirm the arrests but have extended road closures around the Olympic Dam mine until Tuesday next week.

The protest over the $30 billion expansion of the Olympic Dam project is due to end on Wednesday this week and has attracted about 350 people from across Australia.

If it gets final approval the expansion at Olympic Dam will create the world’s largest open-cut mine.

Annual copper production will triple to about 750,000 tonnes and uranium oxide production will jump to 19,000 tonnes.

The company has until the end of the year to give the expansion the final go-ahead or face having to renegotiate approvals with the state government.

The protest at Olympic Dam follows court action by Aboriginal elder Kevin Buzzacott, who also wants to block the mine’s expansion.
