With all that Facebooking, Twittering, emailing and web browsing, your phone and computer are probably down to 5% battery by sunset. And odds are, when bedtime rolls around, you plug in your phone, tablet and laptop to let them recharge overnight. Then there are the things that are always plugged in, like your TV, your coffee maker and your electric toothbrush. Plugging in like this is actually bad on three accounts. First, overcharging your devices can ruin their battery life. Second, you’ll end up with more expensive energy bills. Third, you’re wasting precious energy by charging a device that doesn’t need more juice, because it’s already hit 100% battery.

Everyone wants to make their living spaces greener these days, and it’s not hard to lessen your footprint. In fact, one of the best ways to save energy is to eliminate this “vampire power” when charging your devices. Vampire power has an appropriate name: It’s the electricity that your devices — from the cable box to the television — draw from power supplies, even when they’re turned off or in standby mode.

But some of the biggest energy vampires are, of course, your tablet and mobile devices. When you plug them in and walk away, or set them in a dock for the night, you’re actually letting your device commit energy vampirism. Unless you’re watching your device at all times and unplugging as soon as they hit full charge, it’s difficult to avoid wasting energy this way.

But have no fear: Tech company Bracketron has developed a line of eco-friendly chargers to make it even easier to charge your iPhone, iPad or micro-USB device without sucking unnecessary energy.

Bracketron is a manufacturer and supplier founded in 2001 that specializes in universal mounting solutions and accessories for many of today’s most popular mobile technologies. But it’s most recently famous for its GreenZero chargers, which promise flexibility and energy efficiency for your dearest gadgets.

Mashable spoke with Christian Johnson, Bracketron’s vice president of marketing, to get an inside look at how an eco-friendly charger can really help save energy (and money).

GreenZero Chargers

Bracketron’s GreenZero chargers automatically shut off once they detect that your device is charged or unplugged. As a result, they save energy and also prolong your device battery’s life by making sure it doesn’t overcharge. These chargers put an end to your devices’ vampire power consumption, so you don’t have to watch them constantly.

“Bracketron’s mission is to develop high-quality, innovative solutions that intelligently extend the use of the device and enhance the overall user experience,” says Johnson. “To that end, the GreenZero line was developed in response to the increasing demand for energy smart solutions.”

When your device has a low battery, just put it in the Mushroom GreenZero charger and press the mushroom-shaped button with your hand or foot. The device will charge until it reaches full battery power. The Mushroom is lightweight, compact and includes a cable reel, making it easy for portable use. Bracketron was named a finalist in the Green Telecom and Smart Energy Solutions category of CTIA’s annual Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards last April for its design work on the Mushroom GreenZero.

The Stone GreenZero is a wall charger that is compatible with USB-chargeable mobile devices. Its sleek design allows it to be easily carried in a bag and similar to the Mushroom GreenZero, the Stone GreenZero starts charging when you press the green button and it shuts off with zero idle power when your device is charged or unplugged.

Portable Power Supply

But chargers aren’t the only eco-friendly products that Bracketron purveys. The Stone Battery is a pocket-sized portable power supply that allows you charge your mobile devices while you’re on the go.

The Stone Battery is an 1000mAmp power device that has an LED light to indicate when your gadget is charged. Like its charger counterparts, it turns off when the device is 100% charged to ensure that nothing gets overcharged. The battery fully charges in three hours and stays fully charged for an entire year, so you don’t have to worry about recharging it until you use all of the energy stored within.

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see what Bracketron comes up with next. Johnson says that he can’t go into specific detail, but the company is “very excited about our current product pipeline and look forward to introducing a series of new mobile device solutions in the near future.”

Bracketron’s eco-friendly line is available on its website and through major retailers such as Amazon, Staples and Target.
