A MAN who stole a $1 million ring in a brazen smash and grab has been jailed.
George Georgiou, 32, used a mini sledgehammer to break a window at Hardy Brothers jewellers as staff were closing their Collins St store in March 2009.
He made off with a 9.1 carat diamond ring, which he later sold for $300,000 to fund his gambling addiction and overseas trips.
Georgiou had stolen another ring several months earlier from a dealer at Camberwell market valued at $26,885.
Neither has been recovered.
County Court Judge Margaret Rizkalla said Georgiou fled to Thailand after stealing the $1 million ring and was later tracked down there by Australian police.
He spent months in a Bangkok prison before being extradited and asked for a discount on his sentence because of the harsh conditions.
But Judge Rizkalla said it was a situation of his own making.
She said Georgiou was driven by his pathological gambling addiction.
Georgiou, of Northcote, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.
Judge Rizkalla said he stood to pocket the $300,000 he’d made selling the diamond ring when released from prison.
But she also ordered that he pay compensation to Hardy Brothers, their insurers and the seller of the second ring.
Georgiou was jailed for five years and three months and ordered to serve at least 3 1/2 years before being eligible for parole.
