A U.S. Army soldier who survived a suicide bombing while serving in Afghanistan was hospitalized Friday after being shot at his homecoming party.

Family members tell the San Bernardino Sun that 22-year-old Christopher Sullivan was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

‘My son didn’t deserve this. He served his country,’ his mother Suzanne Sullivan told the Sun.

She said her son suffered two gunshot wounds to his back, which shattered his spine, leaving him paralyzed, the Associated Press reports.

Sullivan was shot Friday night at a party that friends threw for him at a home in San Bernardino.

Police said Sullivan’s brother and a partygoer got into an argument.

When Sullivan moved to break up the fight, the man pulled a gun and opened fire at Sullivan.

The gunman fled the scene before police arrived.

Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year in Kandahar while serving with the 101st Infantry Division.

He suffered a cracked collar bone and brain damage in the attack and has been recovering in Kentucky where he is stationed.

He was home on leave when the shooting occurred.

His enlistment would be complete in April, after which Sullivan had planned to come home to go to college.

Family members are calling on the shooter to surrender.

Police have not identified the suspect.

relax…. it California. It’s what they do

The coward who did this wouldn’t last 5 minutes in the army. What a big tough man shooting a soldier not once but twice in the back NOT!……

I love how “jaydee, hot springs” tried to imply she is some big fish in this all.
It was a coward who shot someone in the back – end of story, a low life coward to spay and pray. I mean trying to man up at a hero’s party and the running after you shoot someone in the back.
There is no justification for that – coward is all I can say. Also lets hope for Karma, the brother does not need to feel bad for some 2 bit low life shooting a man in the back.
There are so few real MEN left in this world.

This is beyond anything that makes sense. Why would someone show up at a party with a gun (especially when he should welcome a soldier home).

“maybe if hais brother had backed down things would not have escalated to gunfire. i hope he (brother) blames himself for this for a long, long time.” – jaydee, hot springs, usa, 25/12/2011 18:13 Wait a minute, who was it who pulled the trigger? The brother?!! Did you not get the gist of this incident? There’s someone who brought a gun to a party, as if he intended or expected trouble. He then shot someone in the back, the coward’s way. Serious toys in the hands of boys. Funny enough, he shot a man who has weaponry training, who could have taught him about handling a gun properly, not just have one in possession and just pull the trigger. And the brother had an argument, so what? No excuse for the gun.

A family more dangerous than the Taliban, I think he’ll want to do back for the safety.

I pray that he makes a speedy recovery and that the gunman does the thing and hands himself in.

Absolutely disgusting that some coward could do this to a man who as served his country, it says a lot that his assailant shot him in the back it shows a distinct lack of courage and moral fibre! I hope Christopher pulls through my thoughts are with his family.

How awful that he survived the attack in Afghanistan (albeit with injuries) only to be paralysed in his family home! Arguments happen between people but if you dont bring a weapon with you then the odds on people getting hurt or worse are a lot less! When are people going to learn this? I hope he makes a speedy recovery, although his life is obviously going to be forever changed from this. I hope they catch the shooter quickly and give him the justice he deserves.
