Spanish princess to pay the price

Spain’s Princess Cristina is to pay almost 600,000 euros (737,000 dollars) to have her name cleared in relation to a corruption case involving her spouse.

The princess’s attorney, Miguel Roca, made the remark during a press conference on Tuesday, adding that that amount would offset the prosecutor’s estimation of how much she could have profited from her husband’s alleged embezzlement, DPA reported.

Roca went on to say that Cristina would immediately transfer the amount, which would “extinguish her civil and criminal responsibility.”

The Princess’s husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, and his former business partner Diego Torres both face charges of utilizing connections in order to divert public funds into their non-profit group.

Urdangarin, Duke of Palma de Mallorca, allegedly diverted around 6 million euros (8.1 million dollars) of public funds through a non-profit institute, which was in his charge from 2004 to 2006.

On Monday, prosecutor Pedro Horrach called for at least 15 years jail time for Urdangarin.

The Spanish public’s confidence in the monarchy has been recently in decline following a series of financial scandals over the last few years, including Princess Cristina’s case.

According to a survey conducted earlier in June, the majority of Spain’s population is in favor of a referendum on the future of monarchy in their country.

Spain has also become the scene of popular protests, urging the abolition of monarchy in the country.
