Strong quake strikes Papua New Guinea

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit some 62 kilometers (39 miles) from the Eastern Highlands provincial capital Goroka, and 324 kilometers from the national capital Port Moresby at a depth of 105 kilometers.

GeoScience duty seismologist Dan Jack said, “At over 100 kilometers deep it would not have caused any damage. No big dramas. “It was felt in Port Moresby, but just a rumble.”

Assistant director at the Port Moresby Geophysical Observatory Chris McKee said it was felt widely, but also said it was too deep to be of concern.

“It was felt over quite a large area of PNG but because it was deep so we wouldn’t expect all that much damage,” he said.

Quakes of such magnitude are common in the impoverished Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea sits on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

Earthquake activity is common in the island country, but only few of them prove destructive.

Papua New Guinea’s houses are mostly built out of wood, and have a very high degree of resistance against earthquakes.
