Suicide rate rises among Indian youths‎

According to a report published in the journal Lancet, about 56 percent of men and 40 percent of women who committed suicide in India were between the ages of 15 and 29.

The reported figures equal the number of men who have been killed in road accidents and women who have died during pregnancy and at childbirth. ‎

The study also showed that most of the suicides in India are committed by wealthy, young and highly educated people. However, at the same time, rural parts of southern India also recorded a very high suicide rate.

The four states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala that account for 22 ‎percent of India’s population recorded 40 percent of the total number of suicides in the country.

The poor farmers in the mentioned states have been taking their lives after failed crops and high debt pushed them to the brink of bankruptcy.

“I think all suicides are preventable. The reason is that suicidal idea gets converted into a real suicidal attempt whether it is successful or unsuccessful because most people find it very difficult to communicate with the people around themselves,” Sanjay Chugh, a psychiatrist told Press TV.

Observers believe unless India takes immediate steps regarding mental health problems and ensures dedicated counseling services for those in urgent need, preventing suicides will prove to be a challenging task.

“If you talk about India, I think mental health is the most inadequately staffed specialty in this country. You know, we have not more than 5,000 practicing psychiatrists in India today,” Chugh explained.

World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about a million people in the world commit suicide every year, 200,000 of which are in China. With 187,000 suicides in 2010 India is at the second spot.
