Sydney shoot-out: alleged robber arrested after siege at Chinese consulate

Police say they fired shots at an alleged armed robber as they chased him down a suburban street in Sydney’s inner west, before he holed himself up in the Chinese consulate in a six-hour siege.

Officers were called to the Alfred Hotel on Missenden Road in Camperdown about 1.30am today, after staff reported being held up by men armed with a hammer and a gun.

They arrested a 27-year-old man at the hotel, while police chased another man as he ran down Dunblane Street.

“During the course of that pursuit, shots were fired,” Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch said.

The man then climbed the fence of the Chinese consulate, which was cordoned off as police searched the area for several hours.

“The Tactical Operations Unit, Dog Squad and negotiators were deployed in the search for and negotiation with the offender, who we still believed to be armed.”

Tactical police, in black uniforms and balaclavas, could be seen on ledges of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital early this morning during the search.

Officers found the hammer and gun, before they arrested the 32-year-old man in a building outside the consulate about 7am, Mr Murdoch said.

The alleged robber has been taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for injuries he received while climbing the consulate’s fence.

The man’s decision to hide in the consulate was believed to be random, Mr Murdoch said.

He said it was too early to be certain about whether the man shot at police or how many shots police fired while chasing him.

He said police quickly told local residents to stay inside and closed off roads.

“At any time police are chasing an offender, who was armed, down a public street and shots are fired, of course it presents a danger to the public.

“That is why police were quick to contain the area in which this incident occurred.”

Mr Murdoch said there would be a critical incident investigation launched into police use of their guns.

“I have just personally spoken to the officers involved and I am very, very comfortable with their actions and satisfied that they acted very, very appropriately given the circumstances.”

Erin Fowler was staying at her boyfriend’s house in Dunblane Street when she was woken by yelling early this morning.

She said she looked outside and saw police chasing a man.

“They were chasing a man and they were yelling ‘get down, get down’,” she said.
