Syrian armed groups rebuff dialog

The rejection came one day after Annan urged an end to the months-long unrest in Syria and called for a peaceful way to implement political reforms.

The former UN chief warned against military intervention in the country and said any miscalculation about Syria will have dire regional consequences.

“We should not forget the possible impact of Syria on the region if there is any miscalculation,” he said.

The US, Britain, France and countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have supported measures against the Syrian government.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

A large number of civilians and security forces have been killed in the violence in recent months.

The Western states and the opposition accuse the government of President Bashar al-Assad of killing people.

Damascus, however, blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
