Syrian Army Restores Control over Key Road in Aleppo Province

nsnbc : The Syrian Arab Amy (SAA) and allied troops and Air Forces restored control over the Aleppo – Khanasar Road, wresting control over key locations from remaining ISIL groups in the region and cutting off vital supply routes for insurgents. The SAA and allied troops are also making progress in the eastern Deir Ez-Zor province where both Russia and members of the US-led coalition carried out air strikes. Turkey continues the cross border shelling of Syrian – Kurdish YPG/ PYG positions.

Syrian Arab Army_Aleppo_Feb 2016The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) confirmed that Army units and supporting forces restored security and full control over the Aleppo – Khansar road after eliminating ISIL terrorists in surrounding towns and villages. The successful restoration of control over the road came after the Syrian Air Force destroyed ISIL positions in the villages of al-Uwainiyeh, Um Mayal and al-Qulai’a in Aleppo countryside. The SAA also noted that Army units expand operations around the Aleppo – Hama road.

The SAA, along with Popular Self-Defense Forces carried out operations in the eastern countryside of Deir Ez-Zor. The SAA reported Monday that the campaign had inflicted heavy losses on ISIL troops there over the last 24 hours. The SAA targeted among others the neighborhoods of al-Hamediyeh, al-Hweiqa and al-Sina’a in Deir Ez-Zor city and reportedly destroyed all of them. Both the Russian Air Force and air forces of the U.S. – led coalition against the self-proclaimed Islamic State carried out air strikes in the oil and resource rich Deir Ez-Zor province. Russian diplomats signaled that Russia and the United States have increased their efforts to coordinate air strikes.

UN Special Envoy Staffan De Mistura affirmed that ISIL and Jabhat Al-Nusrah currently present the greatest danger to security in the region. While the ceasefire that came into effect Saturday is generally holding, it excludes ISIL, Jabhat Al-Nusrah and other insurgencies designated as terrorist organizations by the UN Security Council. De Mistura announced that the UN was increasing its humanitarian effort in those regions were the ceasefire was in place.

Meanwhile, Turkish Army units continued the cross-border shelling of positions of the Syrian – Kurdish YPG / PYG. Turkey considers the YPG / PYG as a threat to Turkey’s security and as terrorists. The YPG / PYG is allied with and is being supported by troops from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which is outlawed in Turkey and many EU member States. Turkey continues its support of what it describes as “Turkmen Rebels”. The cross border shelling effectively supports Jabhat Al-Nusrah and ISIL in northern, especially northwestern Syria. Russia, for its part, calls for including the Kurds in the peace talks in Geneva.

Both Russian and U.S. diplomats have begun to downplay that there should be a Plan B for Syria, despite the fact that military logic dictates that Russia, Syria, Iran, Israel, and Turkey all have military contingency plans. As former U.S. President George W. Bush would have said, “There is time for politics, and yes it is time for politics”.
