Jewish talk show host Larry King, 87, has been hospitalized with COVID-19.
According to CNN, King — who suffers from diabetes, and previously had lung cancer and several heart attacks — has been treated at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for over a week.
The Peabody Award-winning broadcaster was among America’s most prominent interviewers of celebrities, presidents and other newsmakers during a half-century career that included 25 years with a nightly show on CNN. King hosted his CNN show, “Larry King Live,” from 1985 to 2010. He now hosts “Larry King Now” on Ora TV.
King in August announced that two of his adult children had died within weeks of each other. Andy King died of a heart attack in late July at the age of 65. Chaia King, 51, died of lung cancer, shortly after it was diagnosed. Both children were from King’s marriage to Alene Atkins. They were married in 1961, divorced two years later, but remarried in 1967 and divorced again in 1971. He adopted Andy, Atkins’ son, in 1962.
“Losing them feels so out of order. No parent should have to bury a child,” King wrote at the time.
He has three other children from previous and subsequent marriages.
King’s diagnosis comes as the coronavirus spreads rapidly in California.
Los Angeles County, the epicenter of the crisis in the state, has surpassed 10,000 COVID-19 deaths alone. Hospitals in the area are overwhelmed, and are struggling to keep up with basics such as oxygen as they treat an unprecedented number of patients with respiratory issues. On Saturday, US Army Corps of Engineers crews arrived to update some hospital’s oxygen delivery systems.
