Tech agenda: new products and innovations at CES

The second week of January is shaping up to be an exciting time for technology fans. Consumer electronics manufacturers from all over the globe will dazzle and delight with innovative new products, eye-popping prototypes and the launch of new technologies during the International CES.

The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the world’s largest consumer technology trade show. It is also one of the most closely followed events on the technology calendar — alongside CeBIT and Computex Taipei — as it welcomes numerous high-profile technology companies and is the launch-place for many groundbreaking new gadgets and high-tech products. 2,700 exhibitors will be at CES in 2012. CES is expected to attract around 140,000 visitors this year and is a “must-see” event for technology enthusiasts.

2nd Click Asia Summit

The Click Asia Summit is the largest digital, social and mobile marketing conference in Asia. The three-day summit is expected to attract more than 500 delegates in 2012 and will host hands-on workshops, seminars and informative discussions about social media. More than 50 speakers and panelists including Microsoft’s Eric Bozinny, Star India’s Lalit Bhagis, TripAdvisor India’s Nikhil Ganju, Saatchi Saatchi’s Aditya Anupkuma and Member of Parliament Dr. Shashi Tharoor will focus on the industry’s key issues. Similar events in the Asian region include (the much larger) CommunicAsia, ad:tech, Mobile VAS Summit and Cloud Asia.

Macworld | iWorld 2012

California-based Apple-centric conference and expo Macworld will be re-branded as Macworld | iWorld in 2012 to signify the gradual shift away from desktop Macintosh computers and towards i-devices and iOS applications. Founded in 1985, the Macworld Conference and Expo is the largest annual Apple Macintosh event in the world. In 2011 Macworld attracted close to 25,000 attendees, making it much larger than Apple’s own annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is capped at around 5,000 places. Organizers also launched a successful Asian version of the conference in September 2011 which attracted an estimated 200,000 people.

Global Game Jam

The Global Game Jam is a gaming tournament, but rather than applauding player skills, it elevates designers’ digits and programmers’ prowess. Participants from around the work partake in the game-making frenzy, where competitors are organized into adhoc teams before attempting to churn out one of the best games of the tournament. The top entries are then put forward for March’s prestigious Game Developers Conference in San Diego. In 2011 more than 6500 participants from 44 countries created over 1500 games.

6th Social Media Week

Cities across the world will simultaneously host conferences and events for the February 2012 edition of Social Media Week (SMW): Empowering Change Through Collaboration. The event is held biannually, attracting more than 60,000 participants to organized events and half a million online and mobile visitors each year. The event aims to draw awareness to new social media technologies and promote the use of social media in corporate, public and non-profit sectors. Participants can watch and take part in live broadcasts of each event and online conversations on the Social Media Week website. The seventh edition of Social Media Week will be held in September 2012.

TED, an acronym for Technology Entertainment Design, brings together scientific pioneers, visionaries, musicians and provocateurs from around the world for its famous talks. The hugely popular TED talks are shown online for free, attracting more than 290 million views. A webcast of the event is available online for $500 and features all 12 sessions of mainstage talks, moderated live chats during and after the conference and an online archive of the entire conference that can be accessed at any time.

CeBIT 2012

In 2011, 4,200 exhibitors from 70 countries and more than 339,000 visitors made their way to Hannover for CeBIT. In its heyday the expo managed to draw around 800,000 visitors but it has since shrunk in size. Nevertheless, with its 450,000-square-meter exhibition space, CeBIT remains the world’s largest digital IT and telecommunications event and eclipses the likes of COMPUTEX, CES and SITEX in exhibition size. “Managing Trust” is the keynote theme in 2012 and concrete solutions for digital and physical security will be on show in the fair’s CeBIT Security World. Related events include CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia (October) and CeBit Australia (May 22-24, 2012).

The annual South by Southwest Music and Media Conference Festival attracts an estimated 100,000 members of the international music, film, and interactive media industries in Austin, Texas, for a week-long convergence of ideas and talent. Like the newer European based LeWeb conference, SXSW Interactive focuses on emerging technology, social media and startups.
