A young teenager has been seriously injured in a crash during a motocross race at Camden in south western Sydney.
The 14-year-old boy from Menai was airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital with head injuries after crashing during an event at the Oakdale junior motocross track on Sunday afternoon.
Club officials stopped racing to allow a CareFlight helicopter trauma team to land at the track.
The semi-conscious teenager was placed in an induced coma with his breathing supported by a ventilator.
CareFlight spokesman said Ian Badham told AAP the boy’s racing helmet likely saved him from more serious injury.
“The helmet took some of the energy from the fall, but the force of it still left him unconscious,” Mr Badham said.
He was admitted to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
