Thousands and thousands of New Yorkers became Muslims as they joined in the “Today I Am A Muslim Too” rally that spread on social media like wildfire.
The demonstration was a celebration of diversity, culminating at Times Square in New York over the weekend. Posters reading “we the people are greater than fear” and “yes we Qu’ran” as celebrities abounded. People from all over the Big Apple came together for “a day of solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters in reaction to the vicious attacks by (President Donald Trump).”
Organizers the Nusantara Foundation and the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding focused on the now-rescinded executive order banning travel of Muslims from 7 countries that have not exported terrorism for the last 4 decades and was discriminatory in nature.
The event was filled with protesters and special guests; including Def Jam Recordings co-founder Russell Simmons who was integral in the organization of the demonstration. Speakers for the protest spanned the spectrum of religious ideology to include rabbis, imams, a Sikh, a Buddhist, Episcopalian and Presbyterian reverends, a Mennonite, a Seventh Day Adventist minister, a Hindu, a Baptist pastor, local politicians and civil rights advocates.
Simmons said: “I think now that [Trump’s] in office, people need to talk to him. He doesn’t realize how much his works will be looked at as horrible in the future. He will leave a legacy of hate and America is moving towards greater love.”
Mayor Bill deBlassio was also in attendance at the rally. He said to the crowd: “We are here to show middle America our beautiful signs and, through our beautiful actions and intentions, that they have been misled. They’ll see our rally; they’ll question their government.”
