Thailand facing deforestation crisis

According to experts, massive deforestation caused by commercial farming led to the deadly floods which struck Thailand last year, killing at least 700 people.

As a result of the flooding, Thailand suffered great losses in its farming sector. The country’s crop sector also witnessed a three percent contraction during the first three months of this year.

“We urgently need to reduce the population in mountain areas and closely controlled land use and farming. Trees are essential to retain excess water. Cutting them down for farming has caused severe landslide. Moving people will be a good way to protect the forest,” environmental expert Chuchip Kongrathok said.

They have called on the relocation of some two million people, blaming the situation on the intensive commercial farming of crops and rice by the population.

“The government should create special funds to support communities’ programs to protect headwater forests, as they have no other means to finance their preservation efforts,” Chulalongkorn University’s Chaya Yodsuan said.

While the country’s Natural Resources and Environment Ministry disagrees with the relocation plan, the government has proposed to pay people living in mountainous areas to plant trees and protect forests.
