These days, you can get a deal on anything. Even salvation! Pope Benedict has announced that his faithful can once again pay the Catholic Church to ease their way through Purgatory and into the Gates of Heaven.

Never mind that Martin Luther fired up the Reformation because of them: Plenary Indulgences are back.

The New York Times reports that even though the church officially broke with the age-old practice — you do something good, and the Church will help absolve you — in 1960, the Pope has quietly reintroduced it. The Catholic Church had technically banned the practice of selling indulgences as long ago as 1567.

Wow! This is a really stupid article and completely inaccurate, not unusual for the NY Times. Indulgences never went anywhere and it was the abuse of them that was in issue during Luther.

“Pope Benedict has announced that his faithful can once again pay the Catholic Church to ease their way through Purgatory and into the Gates of Heaven.” This quote from the article doesn’t back itself up in any way, shape or form. Why don’t they quote him exactly, tell us when, where, how. It looks like a smear article written by a junior high school student, tailor made for Catholic bashers.

An indulgence is the full or partial remission of temporal punishment for sins after the sinner confesses and receives absolution. Under Catholic teaching, every sin must be purified either here on earth or after death in a state called purgatory.

Ain’t that just terrible?
This is the most ignorant article I have ever read. An indulgence is the remission of temporal punishment due to sin. The article fails to distinguish between the idea of plenary indulgences (you go straight to heaven when you die instead of going through Purgatory) and PURCHASING indulgences. Purchasing indulgences became popular when Crusaders wanted to receive forgiveness for sins by giving money to the Church instead of going on Crusade. This is now illegal within the Church. An indulgence is an involved process, and you can’t just give money to the Church and get your relative out of Purgatory. How ignorant you must be to buy into such stupidity. If you want to try to dog the Church, you better get your Catechism out and get at least some of your facts right before you open your mouth.

This article (from the NY times) was from 2009. The indulgences, which is like a prayerful exercise meditation for catholics, was only re-introduced for one year in honor a saint. A priest even jokes in the NY times article itself that they (the church) are “not selling them this time”. The Church screwed it up with indulgences 500 years ago, but not this time. Be careful what you read on the net.

Ummmm, indulgences have never been banned by the Catholic Church. The Counter Reformation addressed the abuse of indulgences-the roadside scammers pretending to sell body parts of saints and such. That is what was banned. But thanks for bit of bigotry. BTW, you can thank the Moravian Church and the Waldensians, not Martin Luther for actually addressing this issue much earlier and with real courage, rather than thirst for power.
