Senator Elizabeth Warren has been pushing her peers on Capitol Hill for support of measures that would cut gun violence down significantly.

Warren has joined with other Democrats in support of United for Gun Safety (UGS); a movement that is focused on, among other things, closing background check loopholes and reducing gun trafficking safety.

This movement is backed by several Democrat Senators, including:

• Chuck Schumer
• Cory Booker
• Kristen Gillibrand
• Ed Markey
• Ron Wyden

The purpose of the movement is to support senators who have “introduced a set of sweeping principles to stop the epidemic of gun violence.”

Warren wrote to supporters: “Senate Democrats are calling on Republicans to support three sensible measures to reduce gun violence. But let’s get real: The only way the Republican leadership will act is if enough people stand up to the NRA. We need to shout loud and clear that we won’t take no for an answer.”

Adam Winkler, professor of law at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), wrote in a recent op – ed piece about how the days of the National Rifle Association (NRA) control as a “political powerhouse may be numbered” because of their supportive base.

Winkler points out that the “core of the NRA’s support comes from white, rural and relatively less educated voters. This demographic is currently influential in politics but clearly on the wane.”

To back this up, Pew Research Center (PRC) conducted a poll last August that showed 57% of whites favor gun rights over gun control; however the 63% majority whites will not be the majority for much longer.

Because minorities are expected to the become the majority in the US by 2020, “an overwhelming 72% of African Americans say that gun control is more important than gun rights.”

Joining the African American population is the Latino Americans who are up by 43% and believe in gun control by a shocking 75% of the total population.

Winkler points to the lack of education in rural areas that helps to explain the focus on gun rights over gun control.

• 50% only attended high school
• 38% of college students favor gun rights

Since the 1970s the NRA has shifted their focus from hunters to self – defense which made sense in the 1980s during the height of skyrocketing crime rates; however with crime on the decline, the self- defense marketing does not make as much sense as it did 30 years ago.
