The tabacco industry gets more time to make transition to plain packets

IT will be another 13 months before cigarettes will come wrapped in plain packaging, after the Gillard Government announced it would give the tobacco industry more time to make the transition to plain packets.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon said this morning the plain-packing legislation had been delayed in the Senate, forcing the government to amend its timeframes.

“The plain packaging legislation passed the House of Representatives in August 2011 but has yet to pass the Senate,” Ms Roxon said.

“Therefore the government has revised the implementation timeframes to give industry enough time to make the changes required.

“While I do not agree with the tobacco companies on most things, I think that it is important that industry gets a reasonable timeframe to make an orderly transition to plain packaging.”

Australia was to have been the first country in the world to pass laws requiring manufactures to sell cigarettes in plain, olive-brown packets.

The laws were supposed to have taken effect from July 1 2012, but the industry now has until December next year to make the changes.

Ms Roxon said the government would push for the legislation to pass the Senate by the end of the year.

“I know that many public health groups have advocated for this legislation and I would ask them to urge the Senate to ensure that there are no further delays,” said Ms Roxon.
