Thieves who bashed 89 year-old man ‘inhumane’

Thieves who beat an 89 year-old man in a vicious attack during a home invasion in Perth are inhumane, the victim’s family say.

Sidney Brady was house-sitting for his daughter on Friday night when at least two offenders broke in and assaulted him, leaving him with severe injuries to his head, hands and ribs.

Mr Brady underwent emergency surgery and is in a stable condition in the intensive care unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Allan Ronald James Poland, 30, and Colin Gregory John Poland, 38, have been charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated armed robbery and aggravated grievous bodily harm.

The men appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court today but were not required to enter a plea and made no application for bail.

They were remanded in custody and will appear in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on November 2.

Outside court, Mr Brady’s family expressed their horror over the attack at the home in Dianella, in Perth’s north.”What they did was horrendous, inhumane,” they told reporters.

The state opposition has called for mandatory sentencing for such crimes, but Premier Colin Barnett says that is not the answer.

Police are searching for an unidentified number of others believed to be involved in the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
