difficult decision to let doctors switch off his life support machine

A couple who lost six children in a house fire will today be quizzed to find out if anyone bore any grudges against them, as police confirmed they believe the blaze was started deliberately.

Officers said forensic tests supported their theory of an arson attack, as reports claimed traces had been found of an accelerant near the letter box.

Siblings Jade, ten, John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six, and Jayden, five, died of smoke inhalation from the fire at the three-bedroom home in Allenton, Derby, in the early hours of Friday.

Grieving parents Mick Philpott, 54, and his wife Mairead, 31, yesterday also had to switch off the life support machine of their son Duwayne, 13.

Neighbours spoke of resentment in the area towards Mr Philpott, who had 17 children by five women and became known as ‘Britain’s biggest scrounger’.

The house fire that killed six brothers and sisters who were asleep in bed was started deliberately, police believe.

Jade Philpott, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, seven, Jessie, six, Jayden, five, and 13-year-old Duwayne died after the blaze ripped through their home in Allenton, Derby, in the early hours of Friday.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: ‘After further forensic examination we believe the fire was not accidental, initial indications are that it was deliberately set and, as a result, six children have been unlawfully killed.’

Duwayne today became the sixth sibling to die after his life support machine was switched off in the early hours of this morning, while his parents Mick Philpott, 54, and wife Mairead, 31, sat at his bedside.

The teenager was taken to a specialist burns unit after
being rescued from the fire at the family’s three-bedroom home.

Police this morning said that Duwayne had died at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

This afternoon it was confirmed that a post mortem examination had found that the first five victims of the fire had died from smoke inhalation.

Mr Cotterill said: ‘I am sad to confirm the news that Duwayne has died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the fire.

‘My deepest sympathies go out to Mr and Mrs Philpott at this distressing time.

It is understood Mrs Philpott had Duwayne before she met her husband, but Mr Philpott, a former baker, raised him as his own.

Mr Philpott, a father of 17 children by five women, made a ‘valiant’ attempt to save all the children, police said.

His
former mistress, Lisa Willis, 28, and her brother-in-law Ian Cousins
were arrested on suspicion of murder but later released without charge.

Mr Cotterill had spoken earlier of his ‘surprise’ at the lack of information received from the public.

He said: ‘While I thank those members
of the community who have come forward with information, I am surprised
by how few people have contacted us. Normally in cases of this scale
more information is passed to the police.

‘I strongly suspect that there is someone out there in the community who knows more than we are being told.’

Until they separated in February,
Miss Willis and her five children also lived at the cramped home where
the blaze broke out in Allenton, Derby.

Four of the children were fathered by
Mr Philpott, though he had also raised Miss Willis’s eldest child,
Jordan, 12, from a previous relationship.  It is understood she had
taken the children with her when she moved out.

Miss Willis then stayed with Mr Cousins and her sister Amanda, 37.

A family source told the Daily Mail:
‘Lisa and Mick broke up a few months ago and she went to stay with Ian
and Amanda for a few days before moving to a hostel and then on to
another home on the other side of Derby.’

The unorthodox family set-up came to
light six years ago when Mr Philpott made both his wife and Miss Willis
pregnant. Mrs Philpott later gave birth to Jayden a month before her
husband’s lover gave birth to a daughter.

Neighbours said that Mr Philpott’s mistress, Lisa Willis, moved out of the family home with five of the couple’s
children just a week before the tragic blaze when he refused to divorce his wife and marry her.

The
dead children were all born to wife Mairead and were asleep when the
fire tore through their three-bedroom semi-detached home.

Mr Philpott, and Mrs Philpott,
31, escaped the blaze without serious injury, but her son Duwayne was left
fighting for his life in a Birmingham hospital.

But the couple made the decision for medics to switch off his life support machine.

The devastated couple made a heart-rending plea for answers to their local priest Father Alan Burbidge, 70, from Duwayne’s bedside, asking: ‘Why us?’

Fr Burbidge told the Sunday Express: ‘They were absolutely devastated and kept crying and asking, “why us?” They said nothing made sense and that they would never get over it.’

The former baker is said to have made a valiant attempt to rescue his children, who were found by firemen still in their beds.

The
family hit the headlines six years ago when it emerged Mr Philpott
shared his cramped council home with his wife and mistress and his ten children by both women – and that both were
pregnant by him again.

Mrs Philpott and Miss Willis later gave birth to a boy and girl respectively within a month of each other.

It is thought that Miss Willis may now be pregnant with Mr Philpott’s 18th child.

A
series of anguished Facebook postings over the last month reveal Mr
Philpott’s torment over the turbulent situation as he declared his love for all
his children.

He had made a public appeal to be moved from the home where the blaze occurred to a
bigger property to accommodate his unusual and growing family.

One friend,
who asked not to be named, said: ‘Lisa left and took the children with
her. I think she stopped Mick from seeing them at one point.’

Mr Philpott has four biological children with Miss Willis: Shareen, aged eight, Katrine, seven, Kirk, six and five-year-old Yawery.

A fifth child, Jordan, 12, was Miss Willis’s from another relationship, but was raised by Mr Philpott and his then-mistress.

Mr Philpott also has six more children: David, 25, Richard, 24, and Michaela, 21, with his first wife, Pamela Lomax; Mikey, 14, and Aidan, 13, with ex-girlfriend Heather Kehoe, and Joshua, five, who Mr Philpott once said was the product of a liaison with the partner of a friend.

Just days ago, Mr Philpott, one of nine siblings himself, wrote of missing his ‘beautiful babies’ as part of a string of Facebook postings professing his love for of his children.

He wrote on May 1: ‘I love all my children more than life itself, including the ones who are not my flesh and blood.’

But less than an hour later, another comment apparently about Miss Willis laid bare the souring of relations between them.

He wrote: ‘All I want is my wife and all my kids they mean more. I’m sorry things turned out like this for my family. Thank Christ I did not divorce Mairead and marry that.’

It is understood the couple parted in late January and had some sort of reconciliation in mid-April, before tensions grew again.

The blaze broke out at the house in Allenton, Derby, at around 3.45am at the front of the 1960s semi on Friday. It is near the city’s giant Rolls Royce factory.

Next-door neighbour Joe Peel, who alerted the emergency services, said he was woken by his dog barking and looked outside his window to see the Philpotts’ front door alight.

He said: ‘I ran out of the house, screaming to the neighbour to wake him up. No one could get near the house because of flames and smoke.

‘Everyone was screaming. A couple of minutes later the fire brigade came down with the police.

‘Two or three minutes later you could see the flames going up the stairs through the side window of the house. When the fire brigade came it was billowing smoke going up the road – it was absolutely horrible’.

Another neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said: ‘It was terrible, just so bad. There was nothing anybody could do.’

A neighbour said Mr Philpott was later seen trying to smash the conservatory window to get back in.

Acting assistant chief constable Steve Cotterill, of Derbyshire Police, said the arrested woman was held elsewhere in the city.

He said: ‘Our thoughts are with the
parents and the family of the children for their tragic loss and for the
community of Allenton, who would of course have known the children.

‘I want to stress that we are keeping an open mind in terms of the investigation. The arrests are only one aspect of the inquiry.

‘It is paramount that we have a thorough investigation of the scene before we determine the cause of the fire.

‘People in the community have been very cooperative and I’m really appreciative for all the help and support we have had as we investigate this tragedy.’

He said officers were working with the fire service to identify the cause of the blaze.

Mr Cotterill said eight people were living in the house permanently, though there might be other people who stayed there from time to time.

Neighbours in Allenton mourning the deaths of the five children have now set up a charity to help pay for their funerals.

Bobby Sutherland, who has lived on the same estate all his life, was inspired to set up an online charity called Catch Me When I Fall because of the children.

Mr Sutherland said: ‘The original statement was about the kids.

‘Everybody’s got kids, everybody wants kids or everybody’s had kids, so it affects everybody.’

He said people should not judge Mr Philpott because ‘he loved his kids’, adding: ‘You make mistakes but you don’t deserve that. Nobody deserves that.’

Could you, would you, ever get over this? NEVER. RIP absolutely heart-wrenching.

My heart goes out to Mr Mrs Philpott and the family left behind. God Bless. R.I.P. X

My heartfelt condolences. This is such a tragedy. There is so little one can say that would bring comfort at a time like this for the parents. But, please, please take note that the chinese lanterns that are being lit as a tribute (And I know they have been done for the kindest of motives) are themselves dangerous and really shouldnt be set off. They can cause a fire themselves.

What a shame R.I.P little ones the person or persons who have done this are pure evil, my heart goes out to Mr Philpot and his wife. I will pray for the family bad luck came to Mr Philpot when he let that Mistress into the family home.

God bless these children. They were innocent and didn’t deserve this.

This is a very tragic case. My condolence to the family. I will urge all reading this article to get working smoke alarms in their homes. Working smoke alarms saves life. The local fire brigade offers free home assessment and smoke alarms.

So very sad!!! Were there no smoke detectors in the house that may have helped save their lives???

– Clare, Bolton, 13/5/2012 21:10 – if you feel so strongly why don’t you start fundraising instead of asking the DM. Unorthodox or not, these little soles did not deserve to die. Very sad – hope solace can be found. RIP

This entire tragedy has broken my heart and been on my mind all weekend.
There should be no judgement regarding the families personal circumstances or their socio-economical status.
6 innocent children have died in the most horrific of circumstances, their parents, I can’t even begin to imagine. And the Firemen that attended that call have to deal with the aftermath too. Life can be so cruel and unjust.
Love one another, love your children and love life because no one knows what’s around the corner.

wow…as well as the support for the mother – .how much support are the other siblings going to need?….i think one of them that died was a twin as well. Horrific.
