nsnbc : Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai responded to the recent decision by the U.S. administration of President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The former Afghan president stressed that he is deeply concerned regarding the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. He warned that Trump’s decision was bound to further escalate violence in the region. Karzai also stressed that the decision is against all the international resolutions.
He said the decision will not only spark furor among the Muslims of the world and will not help the peace bid in the Middle East but will further violence in the region. Karzai did not mention the fact that Jerusalem also is the home of the Christian religion and that the decision also causes grave concerns among Arab Christians and Christians worldwide.
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel instructing the Department of State to shift the US embassy from Tel Aviv. “Today we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” he said. Trump further added that Washington still supports a two-state solution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict, if approved by both sides.
The Afghan government a statement had earlier said that the decision regarding Jerusalem should be taken in consideration with the sensitivity of the Muslims and other religions to which the place is considered as sacred and in line with the international laws.
