Loup Jean Rene Bureau_FRance_French Journalist_Turkey_Aug 2017French freelance journalist Loup Jean Rene Bureau previously worked for the French channel TV5. He was detained last week at the Habur border checkpoint in Turkey’s southeastern Sirnak province near the Turkish – Iraqi border.

On August 2 he was formally arrested ahead of pre-trial charges of membership in the Syrian Kurdish People’s Defense Units (YPG).

Judicial sources in Turkey stated that the charges relate to a report on the YPG that the accused had done several years ago with the YPG in Syria. No details were mentioned. Turkey’s State-run Anadolu news agency claimed he was found in possession of a video entitled “List of Weapon Distribution”.

Turkey considers the YPG as terrorist organization allied and on par with Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK). The United States see the YPG as one of the main Syrian allies in the fight against ISIS within the framework of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Even though, General Raymond Thomas, commander of the United States special operations forces command, recently admitted that the YPG had a PR problem having posters and flags of jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan on display everywhere.

The French diplomatic service and government is reportedly following the case with “greatest attention” and consular access is reportedly being sought to the jailed French journalist.
