Facebook, Twitter and BlackBerrys were not used to organise violence during August’s riots, executives representing the companies have told MPs.

Speaking to the Home Affairs Select Committee yesterday, the representatives said there was ‘no evidence’ the services had been used to co-ordinate the unrest across the country.

They added that government plans to turn off the social networking sites at times of unrest would be ‘absolutely horrible.’

Despite this, Stephen Bates, managing director of BlackBerry-owner Research in Motion said the company would comply with orders given in special circumstances such as threats of terrorism or mass criminality.

He added that the company had a strong view that communications and social media were a force for good and it didn’t see it ‘being a good way forward’ to suspend social networks during periods of large-scale disorder.

  1. They wouldn’t want to shut this off — then how would they themselves incite riots next time? placeofrefuge2012.com

How would they monitor everything ?

They have to choose between that and their control freak tendencies.

  2. I believe they are trying to put Stephen Bates out of business. He wouldn’t comply to shut the phones off during the riot, nor the “Arab Spring”, nor during 9/11! And they don’t like people who don’t comply now do they.

That is why his stocks are down 25% today, AGAIN. I don’t understand why people can’t see this.

I would buy a blackberry first before any other stupid smart phone IF I wasn’t going to buy one. But I never will.

Boycots of all of these crooks needs to happen asap, not later but NOW.
