UK female imprisonment highest in EU

An investigation by The Independent showed the number of women in prison has been doubled in 15 years which has led to the separation of 17,240 children from their mothers who are imprisoned in Britain’s jails.

According to the figures, only 80 young children are provided with a place to live with their mothers in jails. The situation has raised concerns among psychologists who believe that separation by imprisonment would cause considerable social and emotional damage to the children involved.

Nearly two thirds of boys whose parents are put behind bars will commit some kind of crime themselves once they become an adult, the reports said.

Moreover, children with a parent in jail showed to be three times more likely to engage in anti-social behavior than their peers.

“A significant number of women in prison are not a risk to the public”, said Baroness Corston, a British Labour Party politician.

Most female prisoners are jailed for low-level crimes such as theft.

The average cost of a woman’s prison place is £56,415 a year. By contrast, intensive community order costs less than a quarter of that.
