UK police faces crisis over racial abuse

The Metropolitan Police came under spotlight after a video recording showed police officers calling a 21-year-old black man a ‘nigger.’

Video recorded on the black man’s mobile phone showed a police man telling him: “The problem with you is you will always be a nigger, yeah? That’s your problem, yeah.”

Furthermore, recorded CCTV footage showed another case of racial abuse committed by the British police on the same day within just hours from the first incident.

CCTV footage showed a British policeman kicking a 15-year-old black teenager to the ground and forcing him to his knees. Both incidents took place on 11 August last year during the unprecedented unrest which was triggered by the British police’s shooting of an unarmed black man, Mark Duggan.

The Huffington Post United Kingdom reported that five officers have been suspended over the scandal so far. Moreover, the Metropolitan Police has said that at least 15 officers are involved in the scandal, reported The Independent.

The Metropolitan Police has referred the complaints to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), reported The Huffington Post UK.

“We have been working closely with the Independent Police Complaints Commission on this,” said Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey insisting that “the Met does not tolerate racism.”

However, The Independent said referring complaints to the IPCC raises questions as the commission has already been asked to investigate the cases.

The IPCC was also criticized over investigating the case of Duggan’s death after forensic evidence showed Duggan was not armed when he was shot dead despite earlier reports that he had been armed and had fired a bullet.
