UK renews anti-Iran nuclear accusations

Iran has frequently maintained its enrichment activities are for civilian purposes in line with the country’s rights as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) for the production of fuel rods for a research reactor that produces vital radioisotopes for cancer patients.

Hague also claimed that Iran has failed to persuade the international community on the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and needs to “reassure the international community about its intentions.”

“We regret that Iran was not prepared to negotiate seriously on specific concerns of the international community – in particular regarding 20 percent enrichment. This is a missed opportunity to address the serious concerns of the international community,” he said.

This comes as Iran has repeatedly dismissed the US-led Western allegations against its nuclear energy program.

Iran’s position was echoed by the 120 member-states of the Non-Aligned Movement back in March when they called on those countries that claim to possess evidence of a possible diversion of Iran’s nuclear energy program to step forward and present their findings.

The United States and some of its allies have imposed a series of sanctions against Iran, claiming that the country’s nuclear energy program may include a military component.

Iran’s nuclear activities are under close inspection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which has carried out numerous checks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence that shows a diversion in Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
