Scotland Yard said yesterday it would reinvestigate the suspicious death of 53-year-old Kester David from Wood Green, North London, nearly two years after his charred remains were discovered under a railway arch.
An initial investigation into the death of David on July 2010 concluded he had taken his own life. But a coroner returned a verdict of open death and a forensic expert said that he could not rule out the possibility of involving a third party in his death.
A new report into the case also revealed a series of errors in the original inquiry, therefore David’s family launched legal action against Scotland Yard for its failure to properly investigate the death.
David’s mother, Winifred Griffith, said, “If Kester had been a white man the police would have conducted a much more effective investigation.”
Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Police came under spotlight after it was revealed that at least 15 police officers were involved in a racial abuse scandal with five officers already suspended.
A video recording showed British police officers calling a 21-year-old black man a “nigger”, and a recorded CCTV footage showed a policeman kicking a 15-year-old black teenager to the ground and forcing him to his knees.
Furthermore, Richard Stone, a former member of the panel investigating the death of Stephen Lawrence, a black British teenager who was killed in a racist attack in 1993, blamed racism within the British police on senior officials, saying racism is more endemic than the police admits.
