UK border services ‘hamstrung’ by cuts

The union was commenting on concerns raised by the Commons culture, media and sport committee chairman John Whittingdale, which wrote to the UK Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt to warn that passport controls are likely to be understaffed during Olympics this summer.

“It is clear that more and more people are now realizing that UKBA has been hamstrung by job cuts and simply cannot function with so few staff,” said PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka.

“Senior UKBA managers and ministers must accept that to run an efficient and effective service they need to reverse these cuts immediately.”

British Airways, part of International Airline Group (IAG), said 1,200 jobs were under threat due to plans to integrate UK regional airline bmi into its Heathrow operations under the airline’s cost-saving plans.

BA said in a statement, “We have begun consultation with our trade unions on proposals to transform the way British Airways works at Gatwick [airport].”

The news comes a few weeks after the IAG, the parent company of BA, highlighted the problems facing the industry including rising oil prices.

Gavin Davies of the GMB union condemned the BA’s announcement of recent job losses as “a disaster for staff morale.”

Moreover, Jim McAuslan, general secretary of the pilots’ union Balpa, said, “Our hearts go out to the large number of bmi HQ-based staff who appear to have borne the brunt of today’s announcement, but each job loss is a personal tragedy. We will be pressing for maximum redeployment opportunities for all bmi pilots, including bmi mainline, bmibaby and bmi Regional, inside BA.”
