UN criticises Tajikistan for using torture

Last week, Tajikistan refused to screen Sacha Baron Cohen’s satirical new film
of a Middle Eastern dictator trampling on democracy.

Tajik distributors said they had no room in their cinemas to screen the film.
Critics of Tajikistan’s human rights record, though, said apsects of the
plot were too close to reality for the authorities’ comfort.

The soaring Pamir mountain range dominates Tajikistan, which is the poorest
state in Central Asia with few natural resources.

Since the start of NATO’s war in Afghanistan in 2002 against the Taliban,
though, Tajikistan has become strategically important. In March Nick Harvey,
the UK’s minister for the Armed Forces, visited Dushanbe to meet his Tajik
counterparts to smooth the passage of British equipment leaving Afghanistan
in 2014.
