UN urges flexibility on Iran nuclear issue

“The Secretary General hopes that, in advance of the forthcoming technical and political meetings, the parties strengthen their resolve to quickly achieve a negotiated solution that restores international confidence in an Iranian nuclear [energy] program that could be deemed exclusively peaceful,” read a note issued by Ban’s spokesperson on Wednesday.

“In this connection, the Secretary-General appeals to the parties to resume their diplomatic engagement with renewed intensity and with the utmost flexibility,” the spokesperson added.

The UN chief also expressed regret for what he called the absence of an agreement between Iran and P5+1 — Russia, China, Britain, France, the US and Germany — on concrete and reciprocal measures during the Moscow meeting on June 18 and 19.

At the end of two-day talks between Iran and the P5+1 on Tuesday, the sides agreed to hold a follow-on technical level meeting in the Turkish city of Istanbul on July 3.

The Moscow meeting came after two days of negotiations in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in May.

Tehran and the P5+1 had also held three rounds of talks; one in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2010, and two in Istanbul, Turkey, in January 2011 and in April 2012.
