A 15-year-old unlicensed driver has died in a fiery car crash in Melbourne’s north-east overnight.

The teenage boy was thrown from the Mitsubishi wagon when it crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Hurstbridge, just before 10pm on Friday. A 15-year-old passenger survived the single-car accident with minor injuries.

The two boys had taken one of their parents’ cars and were travelling north on Wattletree Road when the driver lost control of the car, police said.

The vehicle veered onto the wrong side of the road, crashing into a tree about 200 metres south of Boyds Road and the driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene.

It is understood that the front-seat passenger was either thrown from the car or escaped before the collision. He was taken to Austin Hospital and discharged this morning.

Police have notified the driver’s next of kin and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Acting Senior Sergeant Daryl Kennedy described the car crash as a horrific accident.

“It’s run off the side of the road for some reason, struck the tree with reasonably high impact and caught fire after that,” he told the ABC.

“It was a very distressing scene unfortunately for the units that had to attend and the emergency services. It’s going to be a more distressing scene for the family and friends who have to deal with the aftermath of it.”

The state’s provisional annual road toll is 114, compared with 118 at the same time last year.
