The coroner will investigate a fiery crash that killed an unlicensed teenage driver in Melbourne’s north-east overnight.

Two 15-year-old boys were in a four-wheel drive that veered off Wattletree Road, hit a tree and burst into flames just before 10:00pm AEST yesterday.

The driver was thrown from the vehicle and killed, with the other teenager suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Austin Hospital.

Acting Senior Sergeant Daryl Kennedy says it was a horrific accident.

“It’s run off the side of the road for some reason, struck the tree with reasonably high impact and caught fire after that,” he said.

“It was a very distressing scene unfortunately for the units that had to attend and the emergency services. It’s going to be a more distressing scene for the family and friends who have to deal with the aftermath of it.”
