UNSC condemns deadly Syrian attacks

On Thursday, the UNSC also urged all sides to implement a UN-Arab League-backed peace plan brokered by special envoy Kofi Annan “in particular to cease all armed violence.”

Meanwhile, Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Jafari says that neighboring Arab countries are supporting terrorists linked to al-Qaeda in Syria.

The Syrian government has also submitted the names of 26 foreign terrorists involved in the recent violence in the country to the UNSC.

Early Thursday, 55 people were killed and almost 400 others injured in two massive bomb attacks in the al-Qazzaz district in Damascus.

On May 9, a bomb attack also targeted a Syrian military truck escorting a convoy of UN observers near the southwestern city of Dara’a. Six Syrian soldiers were wounded in the attack.

A number of UN observers are currently monitoring the ceasefire in Syria which took effect on April 12.

The ceasefire was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by Annan in March.

The first group of the observers arrived in the Syrian capital on April 15 in line with the UNSC Resolution 2042, which had been approved a day earlier.

On April 21, the Security Council met and unanimously voted on Resolution 2043 to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.
