US Congress prosecutes light-weights

The failed operation involved the US Justice Department smuggling guns across the Mexican border and then trying to track them to hopefully lead to gang leaders of drug violence; however, during the operation a US agent was shot at the border with one of the guns and that exposed the operation. US Congress voted to hold Holder on contempt charges for not being totally truthful to them about the operation.

Press TV has interviewed David Lindorff, author and investigative journalist, in Philadelphia about what some analysts are describing as a political stunt. What follows is an approximate transcript of the interview.

Press TV: How is it that though he is being held in contempt Mr. Holder’s case will be carried out by a prosecutor under him with all the clear implications of loyalty? Does that in a sense mean that Holder is truly above US law?

Lindorff: In a sense. If they really wanted to get after him they’d have to appoint a special prosecutor, but they basically emasculated the special prosecutor statute back in the days when it was Democrats going after Bush Administration and Reagan Administration officials.

So there isn’t a good way or an easy way to have an investigation of an attorney general who is the boss of the prosecutors. It technically could be done… you could get a courier prosecutor who has kind of a civil service standing who could do it, but you know the reality is it’s a non-story, it’s kind of a spray that doesn’t matter that much to most Americans and isn’t going to go anywhere, it’s trying to get points and get in the news.

Press TV: This obviously all comes after Obama won support from the Supreme Court for his health care reforms. How does the Holder case reflect upon Obama and his chances for reelection come November?

Lindorff: I don’t think it amounts to anything really as I said it’s kind of point-scoring within Congress. If they were really serious they would have held the bankers who testified and lied to Congress blatantly, most recently Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan, in contempt.

But instead of that they do things like go after a pitcher of a baseball game for lying to Congress. They go after the light-weights and actually try to prosecute them and get them in court for lying to Congress, but they don’t go after the big heavy-weights.

This will never go to trial, it will never amount to anything, Holder will not be bothered by it and it will go away long before the election comes up.

Press TV: Was this essentially then a tactic to distract the public in a sense from the bigger issues that the Americans face at this point?

Lindorff: Yes I think that would be a good analysis of it, I mean there are so many big issues that are facing the country and this is a non-issue.

It was obvious that guns could get lost in an operation like that so when they get lost they turn up in bad places.

There are much more serious things that have gotten lost like stinger missiles and things that go into the hands of terrorists.

If you really wanted to get at serious issues look at where military weapons are winding up, not where a few AK-47s are winding up.

But they’re not really serious about anything in Congress these days.
