US funds warn of sanctions on Russia

US fund managers have warned of risks shareholders could face from current or future Western sanctions against Russia, as Washington move to impose more sanctions on Moscow over their dispute on Ukraine.

Since April 4, securities filings have outlined potential problems for funds including the $124.6 million ING Russia Fund, the $841.1 million SSgA Emerging Markets Fund and a number of iShares exchange-traded funds offered by BlackRock Inc.

The filing for the SSgA fund noted that sanctions by the US or the European Union could result in the depreciation of the Russian currency, Reuters reported Friday.

According to the report, US securities regulators contacted fund firms with holdings in Russia last month to make sure they were properly managing risk and disclosing the assets to investors.

Although international negotiators in Geneva on Thursday expressed hopes to defuse the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, tensions have not abated yet. The United States has threatened further sanctions on Russia if the stalemate continues.

Washington accuses Moscow of supporting anti-Kiev protesters in Ukraine. Moscow denies the accusation.

US National Security Adviser Susan Rice said on Friday, “Those costs and sanctions could include targeting very significant sectors of the Russian economy.”

The US and the UE has already imposed sanctions such as visa bans and asset freezes on a number of individuals in Russia and Crimea, a peninsula that broke away from Ukraine last month and rejoin Russia after residents wanted so in a referendum.

Despite US call for further pressure on Russia, some European states are reluctant to do so, fearing it could provoke Russia to retaliate. European economies heavily rely on Russian gas and oil.
