As feverish national speculation rose, many people rushed out to buy the $1
tickets in the 42 states where they are available.
The scale of the money on offer became a source of immediate fascination in
the United States and the term “Mega Millions” was soon the number trending
topic on Twitter.
One Twitter user suggested that the money could be used to bail out the
flagging campaign of Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House who has
been forced to cut a third of his staff as fundraising dries up.
Another noted that the winner would still be less than twice as rich as Mitt
Romney, the former private equity boss who looks likely to win the
Republican nomination to take on Barack Obama in November.
