US police arrest 8 Occupy protesters

The arrests were made after dozens of Occupy Atlanta protesters entered a Chase Manhattan Bank’s branch on Friday to protest the impending eviction of an American family from their home.

“This action is part of a larger campaign against Chase Bank in getting the deed back from Chase to the Pittman family,” an Occupy Atlanta press release stated.

Members of the Occupy Atlanta movement have been camping outside the Pittman’s home since last December to help prevent the family’s eviction.

Eloise Pittman, a former Atlanta Public Schools employee, had lived in the home since 1953. After she passed away last November, her daughter was faced with paying off her mother’s refinanced home loan of USD 400,000.

The mortgage crisis in the US has forced millions of Americans to file for foreclosure proceedings over the recent years.

The Occupy movement owes its inspiration to the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protests, which began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York’s financial district on September 17, 2011 to protest against the excessive influence of big corporations on the US policies and the high-level corruption in the country.

More than 6,000 Occupy protesters have been apprehended since the emergence of the movement.
