US to keep pressuring Iran: White House

White House spokesman Jay Carney made the remarks on the eve of the upcoming talk in Baghdad between Iran and the P5+1 group — Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

“We will continue to pressure Tehran, continue to move forward with the sanctions that will be coming online as the year progresses,” he said.

Carney, however, welcomed a tentative deal between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Tehran as “a step forward,” but said, “Promises are one thing, actions and fulfillments of obligations are another.”

“The announcement today is a step forward. It’s an agreement in principle. It represents a step in the right direction.”

After talks with Iranian officials in Tehran, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said on Tuesday that Iran and the agency had reached a deal to resolve contentious issues.

Carney also said that the latest round of negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group in Istanbul had been positive and that the US was looking forward to further progress.

The talks between Iran and the six members of the P5+1 group were held in the Turkish city on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive and agreed to hold the next round of the talks in Baghdad.

Tehran and the P5+1 had previously held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.
