Verdict protest in Bangladesh kills 21

On Thursday, riot police opened fire on thousands of protesters who had gathered in Sirajganj district in the capital, Dhaka, to voice their outrage at the court’s ruling against Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami party.

According to local sources, at least 300 protesters were also injured during the violent clashes.

Earlier in the day, a special tribunal in Dhaka sentenced Delwar Hossain Sayedee, vice-president of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, to death for committing crimes during the country’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971.

The verdict was announced in a packed courtroom, while the lawyers for the defendant banned the verdict session and rejected it as politically motivated.

Tajul Islam, Sayedee’s lawyer, described the verdict as “a gross miscarriage of justice”, adding that his defendant did not live in the town where the alleged crimes took place.

“It’s a case of mistaken identity. We’re stunned,” the lawyer said.

Jamaat has not yet reacted to the verdict. However, the party has called for a nationwide strike demanding a halt to such trials.

Earlier this month the tribunal sentenced Jamaat’s assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Molla to life in prison.

The verdict enraged the party’s supporters, who staged a number of demonstrations in central Dhaka in protest.

The tribunal has been tainted by accusations and controversies that it targets only opposition figures with trumped-up charges, allegations that the government has denied.

Rights groups also say the court’s legal procedures fall short of international standards.
