The Veterans Health Administration offers an alternative to nursing homes called Medical Foster Homes. The Lansing State Journal recently wrote about two aging Vets who have forged familial bonds in the care of such a home. Learn more about the program below.
Medical Foster Home
A Medical Foster Home is an alternative to a nursing home where a Veteran is matched with a caregiver in the community. The care is provided in the caregiver’s home to the Veteran 24 hours a day.
Medical Foster Home is appropriate for Veterans who require nursing home care but prefer a non-institutional setting and would not need nursing home care if Medical Foster Home is available. All Medical Foster Home are inspected and approved by the local VA medical center. VA ensures that the caregiver is well trained to provide the required VA planned care.
How is it Different from a Nursing Home?
1) The home is owned or rented by the caregiver.
2) The caregiver lives in the Medical Foster Home and provides personal care and supervision.
3) There are no more than three residents receiving care in the Medical Foster Home, including both Veterans and non-Veterans.
4) Medical Foster Home residents are enrolled in a VA home care program.
Who Pays for a Medical Foster Home?
The Veteran pays the caregiver using his or her own resources. Caregiver cost usually runs from $1500 to $3000 each month based on the Veterans’income and level of care, and is agreed upon ahead of time by both the Veteran and the caregiver.
VA provides primary care to the Veteran through the Home Based Primary Care or Spinal Cord Injury Home Care programs. Staff from these programs makes home visits to provide home assessment, caregiver education, and patient care.
