Vibrating tattoo could replace your ringtone

The Finnish phone maker recently filed a U.S. patent application for a ferromagnetic material that would allow people to communicate with electronic devices through their skin, essentially putting even the coolest of ringtones to shame.

While the device can be stamped, sprayed, attached with adhesive tape, applied as a decal or even drawn onto the body, Nokia pays the greatest amount of attention in their filing to an injectable ferromagnetic ink that could be used to create vibrating tattoos.

The application suggests that different vibration levels could be used to alert users of incoming phone calls, text messages, and emails. The tattoo could also be linked to electronic devices such as tablets, laptops, music players, tablets and game consoles.

How does it work?

Haptics are commonly used in the fields of gaming and research, but never before has a haptic material been used suggested as an injectable material for consumers.

Anyone who has played a PlayStation game would be familiar with haptic feedback technology. In the patent application, Nokia describes this as a “perceivable impulse,” explaining that their device would be “capable of detecting a magnetic field and transferring a perceivable stimulus to the skin, wherein the perceivable stimulus relates to the magnetic field.”

If the vibrating tattoo is successfully implemented, the filing notes that they could also be used for security purposes.

What do you think? Are vibrating tattoos cool or creepy? Would you get one in the future?
