VMware 1Q profit up 52 percent on strong demand

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — VMware Inc.‘s first-quarter profit increased 52 percent on strong revenue gains. The software company raised its full-year revenue forecast, and its shares climbed in after-hours trading.

The company, based in Palo Alto, Calif., makes “virtualization” software, which companies use to get more out of their computer servers. VMware stands to benefit from the larger trend toward moving information to virtual or “cloud” environments.

VMware earned $191.4 million, or 44 cents per share, for the quarter that ended March 31. That’s up from $125.8 million, or 29 cents per share, in the same quarter last year.

Revenue rose 25 percent to $1.06 billion with gains in both its license and services business in the U.S. and abroad.

The results beat analysts’ expectations of 59 cents per share on revenue of $1.03 billion according to data from FactSet.

VMware expects revenue of $1.10 to $1.12 billion in the second quarter. Analysts forecast $1.10 billion. It also raised its full-year revenue forecast to $4.53 to $4.63 billion, up from its prior guidance of $4.48 billion to $4.60 billion. Analysts expect revenue of $4.56 for the year.

Shares of VMware jumped $3.01, nearly 3 percent, in after-hours trading to $114.30 on the news. They closed traditional trading up 80 cents at $111.29 Wednesday.
