‘West anti-Syria bids target global peace’

In a Wednesday interview with Press TV, Lawrence Freeman, with Executive Intelligence Review, pointed to the West’s campaign against Damascus and noted, “They are intent on overthrowing the government in Syria.”

“This will destabilize the entire region, may cause multiple wars between Sunnis and Shias, between the Kurds and Turkey,” he pointed out.

“It also has very dangerous implications globally … this is larger than Syria. This is an attack of the sovereignty of nations around the world by the British and US, [and] NATO forces,” Freeman added.

The analyst argued that the US is “very, very cautious not to involve the military in this situation (in Syria), because we could end up with a situation worse than we had in Iraq and Libya.”

“The strategy is chaos and destruction of the nation … there is now increasing military aid being given to these forces but you don’t have to tell these forces what to do. You don’t have to deploy them, he pointed out.

The comments come following a media revelation on Wednesday that US President Barack Obama has reportedly signed a secret order, authorizing more support for the insurgents fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

The decree broadly permits the CIA and other US agencies to aid the insurgents in Syria against the country’s army.

The order, known as an intelligence “finding,” marks Washington’s growing support for armed terrorists in Syria.

The move came after the United States and its allies failed to push tougher sanctions against the Assad government in mid-July at the UN Security Council.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ are behind the unrest while the opposition accuses the security forces of killing protesters.
