Where Angels Fear to Tread Hitler Willingly Went

During the Great European War 1914 – 1918, Adolf Hitler fought along the frontline trenches of the Western Front’s most furiously contested battlefronts. These apocalyptic conflicts include places renowned for valour, carnage and destruction of lives: Yser, Ypres, Flanders, Neuve Chapelle, La Bassee, Arras, Artuis, Somme, Fromelles, Alsace Lorraine, Aillette, Montdidier, Soissons, Rheims, Oise, Marne, Champagne, Vosle, Monchy, Bapaume.

The uncommon common soldier, who was to become Europe’s greatest social reformer and guarantor of a secure Europe, displayed exemplary courage in a conflict that involved more than forty battles. Corporal Hitler was wounded on 5 October 1916 and was hospitalised for two months. Adolf Hitler returned to the front where he remained until 15 October 1918 when he was hospitalised again, this time for gas poisoning.

Throughout the course of the war Hitler was cited for valour and distinguished conduct in the field. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class on 2 December 1914. He was also awarded the Bavarian Military Medal 3rd class with bar, and later the Iron Cross 1st class. He received, as did all wounded soldiers, the Cross of Military Merit. Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin were fond of displaying rows of medals on their tunics; neither had ever fought in a conflict. Adolf Hitler never displayed his medals except on military occasions where it was protocol for him to do so.

Lieutenant Colonel Godin, in his official request that Hitler be awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class, stated: “He was a model of coolness and courage in both trench warfare and assault combat. He was always ready to volunteer for carrying messages in the most difficult and dangerous situations.”
