Why Did Delaware Police Shoot & Kill a Black Man in a Wheelchair?

Susanne Posel (OC) : Willington police department (WPD) apparently have shot and killed an African-American man in a wheelchair who had his hands up in the air because he was allegedly suicidal.

Delaware_Willington Police_Shooting_OC_SP_USAThe WPD stated in a news release that the wheel-chaired man named Jeremy McDowell was “armed with a handgun” when they arrived on the scene.

The killing is being called “a departmental shooting” – meaning that the victim died on the scene. No additional information is being released to the public while officers such as WPD Chief Bobby Cummings are speaking with relatives and neighbors about what they may have witnessed during the shooting.

Alexis Anthony, McDowell’s cousin, told the press that he was shot 5 times by the WPD, after he told them he was attempting to commit suicide.

Anthony asked: “They couldn’t [use a Taser on] him? Instead, they killed him instead. They could have knocked him out of his wheelchair.”

Cummings said that McDowell’s family members confronted the WPD officers who were involved in the shooting at the scene.

Eugene Smith, McDowell’s uncle, said the WPD shooting was “an execution” by the cops. Smith said: “It was an execution. That’s what it was. I don’t care if he was black, white, whatever.”

The WPD officers shown in the video shooting McDowell are white; although the department is officially withholding the race of the officers involved.

Video footage of the scene shows a different scene than the WPD are painting.
